OCA - TAOP - Exercise 12

Exercise 12, Positioning The Horizon,

The aim of this exercise is to see where the placement of the horizon in a photograph affects the way the final image is perceived. Logically, if the horizon is placed quite low in the frame it places much more emphasis on the sky and vice versa - if the horizon is place quite high in the frame it should place much more emphasis on the landscape and foreground.

Starting from having the horizon high in the frame -

As I suspected, lower the horizon the more emphasis on the sky and the higher the horizon the more emphasis on the foreground. A centrally placed horizon gives a greater sense of balance between the sky and ground, and in this sequence is my preference as there is both detail in the sky and foreground.

However, I also feel that in this sequence a slightly higher placed horizon (possibly second or third of the sequence) also works, giving a slightly greater sense of depth as opposed to the centrally placed horizons as it takes more time for the eye to pass from the horizon to the bottom of the frame making it seem as though the distance is greater. It also places more emphasis on the foam on top of the river, which to me is a fairly interesting detail that is otherwise cut off and lost on the centrally placed horizons in the sequence.

For this sequence, the lower placed horizons did nothing for me, whilst the sky has detail in it from the clouds etc. it is not as distinguishable or colourful as the landscape and foreground which is otherwise lost as the photograph focuses so heavily on the sky.

Note - I took more than the 6 photographs expected for this exercise in order to have more options to look at afterwards and compare to one another, as well as being able to place them side by side to see the subtle yet noticeable decrease in the height of the horizon.
