OCA - TAOP - Exercise 2

Exercise 2, Focus With A Set Aperture;

This exercise is to show the effect of a shallow depth of field focused at different distances. The sharp focus in an otherwise out of focus photo immediately draws attention as it stands out very clearly compared to its surroundings.

I took 3 photographs of a fence at a very shallow angle in order to maximise the depth of the fence in the photo. All images were shot at f/2.8, focusing on a portion of the fence that was nearer to me, a midway point on the fence and a far section of the fence.

Near focus - As you can see a portion of the fence closest is very sharp and in focus, however the background is out of focus.

Mid focus - The middle section of the fence is in focus, however parts of the photo in the foreground and the background are slightly out of focus.

Far focus - the focal point was set to the furthest part of the fence that is visible. As you can see the foreground is quite blurred, but the fence and tree to the left of the photo are sharp and in focus.

My preferred version is the near focus photo, as I much prefer to have the main focus point to be near to the front of a photo as opposed to being further back and being lost in a haze of blurriness. The mid focus version is a close second as it feels balanced with an equal amount of out of focus surroundings in front and behind the focus point. The far focus version is my least favourite as it seems lost in so much of the out of focus surroundings, though this may be due t othe angle I shot the photo at.
