OCA - TAOP - Exercise 9

Exercise 9, Focal Lengths,

In this exercise the aim is to show the difference between focal lengths and the effect it has on the angle of view. For my subject I chose Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, to give an interesting focus point in the distance and ranged my shots from 12mm - 70mm. All shots were taken whilst stood in the same place.

Starting from the shortest focal point;

12mm
14mm

18mm
24mm
24mm (From a different Lens)
30mm
36mm
50mm
                                                                                               70mm

Please note, all of these shots were taken on a crop sensor camera, so should all my multiplied by 1.5x to get a true focal length equivilant for a full frame sensor or traditional 35mm camera. So all shots actually range from 18mm - 105mm.

The whole set clearly shows the effect the lens magnification has on the angle of view, the image at 12mm shows alot of the surrounding scenery, scenery that is not even noticeable by eye (considering that our eyes are roughly equivilant to 35mm on a crop camera or 50mm on a full frame camera). This wide angle of view is ideal for landscape images, however would not necessarily be beneficial for portrait shots where the focus should be on the model and not the surrounding area. Whereas the 70mm shot fills the frame quite nicely (even if it is a bit wonky and not completely straight, I can only blame myself as the shots were handheld), meaning that all of the focus is on the Hall as opposed to the surrounding scenery.
